I received a notice from the IRS. Can Tax-Aide help me with this?

First, be sure you access this IRS page to learn about IRS notices and letters and how to respond to them.  Also, read your notice carefully before you seek assistance, as most notices are not difficult to understand or respond to.

If your return was prepared by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers, you can get assistance in reviewing an IRS or State notice. Please send an email to with your name, state, zip code, daytime phone number, the name and address of the site where your return was prepared and a brief description of the issue. Your inquiry will be routed to local volunteers who will contact you directly and try to help you understand the notice and correct your return as necessary. Please note that our volunteers are not liable for any penalties or interest arising from errors.

If your return was NOT prepared by Tax-Aide volunteers, you should call the number listed on the notice for more information about why the notice was sent. If you are not sure if this is a legitimate notice, contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 or contact your nearest IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in your local phone book.

If the notice is demanding immediate payment by wire or electronic check or you were contacted by telephone or email, it is probably not legitimate. More information is available at:
